Midnight at the Oasis
Early in Athas’ history, before the sorceror-kings, the realm was attacked by primordials. There were no gods to defend them, so it was up to mortals to protect themselves. The psion Hextor and his brother Heironeous were among those who drove off the primordials, and came to be worshipped as gods by those they’d saved. Hextor appeared as a six-armed, tusked creature in full armor, and represented war, discord, conflict, and tyranny in battle.
Eventually, the brothers retreated from Athas and created a demiplane for themselves, which came to be known as Samarthia. Hextor created the salamanders as his servants — cunning, fierce, the perfect warrior. They warred against Heironeous’ angels. Eventually, Heironeous and Hextor left the world as we know it — though whether ascended into pure psionic power, dying naturally, or having left Athas entirely, no one knows for sure.
