Sea of Silt
The Sea of Silt is an enormous dust sink that extends for thousands of miles east from the Tyr Region. In ancient days it was an ocean of water, but now it appears to be an endless plain of gray dust; it effectively marks the edge of the world. No one knows what is on the other side.
The Sea is traveled by silt skimmers or waders that are able to travel in the shallow dust, following known trails to enable trade between far-flung settlements. Many traders make their living traveling the sea, as well as pirates who prey on merchants and travelers. Those who make their living on the Sea also have to beware of the terrible creatures that lurk under the silt, waiting for unwary ships. Silt horrors, giant tentacled kraken-like beasts, are a particularly well-known danger.
Several “islands” dot the Sea, but aside from traders, few care about the primitive tribes or settlements isolated from the rest of Athas. The genasi (or “half-elementals”) eke out a living in the dusty islands of the Sea of Silt, far away from the reach of the defilers.
