Midnight at the Oasis
Early in Athas’ history, before the sorceror-kings, the realm was attacked by primordials. There were no gods to defend them, so it was up to mortals to protect themselves. The psion Heironeous and his brother Hextor were among those who drove off the primordials, and came to be worshipped as gods by those they’d saved. Heironeous appeared as a handsome blonde man with perfect features, and represented chivalry, justice, honor, and valor in battle.
Eventually, the brothers retreated from Athas and created a demiplane for themselves, which came to be known as Samarthia. Heironeous created the angels as his servants — obedient, identical, the perfect warrior. They warred against Hextor’s salamanders. Eventually, Heironeous and Hextor left the world as we know it — though whether ascended into pure psionic power, dying naturally, or having left Athas entirely, no one knows for sure.
